How much does it cost to get an air conditioner installed in Sydney?

Short answer

In Sydney in 2026 a single split system typically costs between about $1,200 and $4,200 fully installed, the low end a small bedroom and the high end a large open-plan room. Labour alone, before the unit, runs roughly $600 to $1,200. The spread is wide because it depends on the kilowatt size, the room area, and whether the pipe run and access are simple or complex. An NSW Energy Savings Scheme discount of up to about $560 can come off the top of an eligible install.

Why you are being given a range and not a price

The published 2026 Sydney guides disagree by a factor of nearly three on the same job description, because they are each quoting a different default job. One source opens with $1,200 for a small bedroom, another puts basic back-to-back labour at $600, and a third tops out at $4,200 for a large open-plan unit. None of them is wrong. They are describing different kilowatt sizes, different room areas, and different access conditions. Anyone who quotes you a single confident number for a job they have not walked is describing a different job than the one you actually have.

What the published guides say

Single split, small bedroom, 2.0 to 2.5kW$1,200 to $2,400
Single split, medium room, 3.5kW$1,600 to $2,800
Single split, large living area, 5 to 8.5kW$2,000 to $4,200
Labour only, basic back-to-back, $600 to $850undefined
Labour only, standard install$800 to $1,200
Labour only, complex install$1,200 and up

The first three rows are supply-and-install totals and the last three rows are labour only, because the two kinds of figure are not comparable. The installed totals are the span across the Sydney guides listed below, all current for 2026 and all including GST. A back-to-back job, where the indoor and outdoor units sit on either side of the same wall, is the cheapest kind; a long pipe run, a double-brick wall, upper-storey access or a strata balcony job pushes it to the top of the range and beyond.

What actually moves your number

Kilowatt size to room area, first: a 2.5kW unit for a bedroom is a different piece of equipment and a different amount of pipe, bracket and electrical work than a 7kW unit for an open-plan living space, and that is most of the distance between $1,200 and $4,200. Access, second, and it is the one that surprises people, because the unit is often the same and only the labour moves. The wall, the pipe run, the balcony, the strata rules and the electrical connection to a dedicated circuit are all quoted separately by installers and that is why two quotes for the same nominal unit can differ by hundreds of dollars.

The discount most people do not claim

This is the single biggest way to cut the total without shopping harder. Under the NSW Energy Savings Scheme an eligible reverse-cycle split system comes with an upfront discount on the quote, applied before you pay, not a rebate afterwards. The NSW Government’s own page lists it at up to $550 for a new 6kW system and up to $560 when replacing an old unit with a 6kW split system, and a limited-time offer in eligible postcodes can take the discount as high as $600. It is applied by the installer as a deduction on the quote, the system must be a GEMS-registered reverse-cycle model, and you only get the full amount if the paperwork is completed and the nomination form is signed before the work starts.

Ducted is a different animal

If the question behind the question is a whole-home system, the number is not on this page. Ducted installations in Sydney start at roughly the low thousands and run well into the tens of thousands depending on the number of rooms and the ceiling space, and the split system figures above are not a fair basis for estimating it. Get the ducted quote as its own line item with its own ESS discount calculation.

The licence that applies

Air conditioning or refrigeration work in NSW, other than plug-in appliances, must be done by a licensed practitioner, and the licence register is free and public.
