How much does it cost to replace a hot water system in Sydney?

Short answer

Installed replacement in Sydney runs from about $800 to $1,600 for an electric storage system, $1,200 to $3,500 for gas storage, and $3,000 to $6,000 for a heat pump before rebates. The spread across published 2026 guides is wide because each assumes a different tank size, access and whether pipework changes are needed. Only heat pump and solar units qualify for NSW or federal rebates.

Why the price is a spread, not a number

Three Sydney pricing guides published in 2026 all describe the same job with different defaults, so their ranges overlap but do not agree. An electric storage unit can sit in an $800 to $1,600 band in one guide and $800 to $2,500 in another. The difference is not error; it is tank size (80L versus 315L), whether the old unit fits the footplate without moving, and whether pipework, a new circuit or a gas line has to change. A like-for-like swap of an accessible tank is a few hours of work; anything that moves the unit or the connections doubles the job.

What the 2026 guides say

Electric storage (supply + install)$800 to $2,500
Gas storage (supply + install)$1,200 to $3,500
Gas continuous flow (supply + install)$1,500 to $3,450
Heat pump (supply + install, before rebates)$2,800 to $6,600
Old system removal and disposal$100 to $400

Ranges are the span across the pricing guides in the sources below, all dated 2026, GST included. They are estimates from guides, several of which are published by businesses that also sell the work, not quotes. A real quote for your specific tank, location and connections will sit somewhere inside or outside these.

The rebates are the part most quotes get wrong

This is the number that is easy to miss and easy to get wrong. Only two system types attract incentives: heat pumps and solar. A plain electric or gas storage replacement qualifies for nothing. For a heat pump replacing an electric unit the NSW Government offers an upfront Energy Savings Scheme discount of up to $640; when replacing a gas unit it is up to $330, on top of the federal Small-scale Technology Certificate discount of roughly $500 to $700. So a heat pump quoted at $4,300 to $6,600 before rebates commonly lands in the $3,000 to $5,100 region after them. An electric storage unit has no such reduction. Ask the installer to show the rebate line in the quote rather than trust a verbal figure.

What actually decides your number

Capacity first: a 315L unit costs more in hardware than an 80L and pulls a different circuit. System type second, and the one with the biggest spread, because a heat pump adds an outdoor unit, refrigerant circuit and a dedicated circuit on top of the plumbing. Access third: a unit in a locked-off void or under a roof that needs a new footplate adds the pipework and possibly a trades crossover to the bill. Time of day matters only for an emergency call-out, when the base price climbs toward the upper end of each band.

What a fair quote names out

The unit model and capacity stated, not just "a new tank". The removal-and-disposal line called out separately. Any pipework, electrical or gasfitting work that is a separate trade, priced in or explicitly out, because gas work needs a licensed gasfitter and a new electrical circuit a licensed electrician. And the rebate, shown as a line item with the scheme it comes from. A quote that quotes "hot water replacement" as one all-in figure is hiding which of those you are paying for and which trade is doing it.

Check who is licensed

Electric, gas and hot water installation are all licensed work in NSW. The licence register is free and public, and a heat pump swap can pull in both an electrician and a gasfitter. See our guide to checking a NSW trade licence before you book the one who will do the work.
